The Harold, developed by Del Close and still the signature form of iO / UCB, is probably the most widely known long-form improvisational form. In this workshop, we'll work on the Traditional Harold at great length. Even if you don't plan on forming a Harold group, practicing the form will benefit you as an improviser by forcing you to think deeply about the nature of your set as a whole, callbacks, and the forced use of abstraction in your sets. The Harold encompasses a wide spectrum of styles: longer, more grounded scenework and fast-paced gamey scenes all have their place in the form.
Here's what former students have said about this workshop:
"Aaron's understanding of the Harold, and improvisation in general, make for a wonderfully productive class environment. Expect great feedback, no matter your experience level."
"TNM's Harold elective is the most elusive, yet most satisfying challenge to one's improv craft. Everyone invested in this art-form owes it to themselves to tackle this form. You will emerge a better, more well-equipped performer for it."
I've been performing improv in Austin for 7 years and teaching at TNM for the past 4 years. In this time I've had the opportunity to study / perform the Harold at iO during their summer intensive and have played the form in multiple improv groups. I think that every improviser should be at least familiar with the form, and every group would benefit from rehearsing it on occasion.
We begin new classes every few weeks. If this one is sold out or held at an inconvenient time, look for our next class session here.
Our improv and sketch class sessions consist of 8 weekly, 2 hour sessions, and a recital show performed in front of an audience.
New class sessions start all the time; at $225 each for improv, $250 each for sketch. Ideally, students continue in the same time slot from Level 1 onward, but if you need to switch to another time or need more info about our Level 2-Level 5 classes or internships, please contact TNM’s Conservatory Director (Nola – TNMNOLA@gmail.com, ATX – TNMATX@gmail.com).
We also offer sketch writing classes, team building workshops for businesses and corporations, week-long and weekend intensives, and kids and teen comedy classes (NOLA only).
